Golden-hour light across a hillside

Aaria & Sam

A hillside homestay, Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh

Aaria and Sam wanted to begin their marriage out of breath and laughing, so we planned an intimate wedding at a homestay in the Himachal hills — mostly a matter of getting thirty people safely up to a mandap among the deodars, and then getting ourselves out of the way.

Wild rose and rhododendron, foraged pine, vows in air thin enough to need catching, and a bonfire supper back at the homestay afterward with exactly one toast each.

It was the smallest wedding we've ever made, and it rhymed with the mango-orchard wedding that started Marigold & Mogra a decade earlier. We didn't say so at the time. We just drove down the hill very happy.

We were afraid small would feel like less. It felt like exactly enough.Aaria & Sam
